The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher May 7th - 10th 2025 at Preston Playhouse. Directed by Maria Adamson

This is the original Victorian "whodunnit" based on the true story that gripped our nation back in the day...

Summer 1860, an elegant county house and a young boy is found dead in an outside privy. All clues point towards the murderer being a member of the grieving household.

Called to investigate is the most celebrated detective of the day, Jonathan Whicher of Scotland Yard. But this case challenges him in ways he’s never been challenged before. Still haunted by the case, he visits the murderer in prison.

As they replay the past, they start to question the nature of truth, the desire for certainty and the possibility of redemption.

A Little Bit About Broughton Players .....

BROUGHTON PLAYERS HISTORY - OUR STORY - Broughton Players’ first ever production was in 1946 at Broughton Club on Whittingham Lane, Broughton, Preston. After many successful productions, they moved to St Martin’s Hall, Broadway in Fulwood in 1959 and continued to produce high quality, very well attended plays. A move to Preston Playhouse in 1978 which remains their home to the present day, has enabled them to work in a real theatre and form a closer working relationship with the other groups using the Playhouse building.

The Society presents three major productions each season ranging from classical favourites, works of contemporary playwrights and recently released plays for amateur societies’ presentation. Plays of high quality are selected to suit a variety of theatrical tastes. In addition to this traditionally each year, the drama societies who are based at the Playhouse work together on a production of One Act Plays to raise funds for the Theatre. Broughton Players encourage their members to become involved in all aspects of a production. There are opportunities for those interested in performing of course, as well as directing, production, play reading, set construction, lighting, sound technology, continuity, costumes, props, health and safety and front of house hospitality. Involvement in amateur theatre offers a real sense of community and the opportunity to make new friends, while working together towards common goal. New members will receive a very warm welcome, training and support. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 16.

Performed on the 12th to 15th February 2025 at Preston Playhouse

"I’m a spark, a flame, a fire. I’m alive. I’m me. I’m free.”

In 2023, injured Academy footballer Maya follows England’s progress through the Women’s World Cup. The roar of the Lionesses echoes a war cry from 1917.

In her Essex hometown, factory workers Sterling Ladies play for two whirlwind seasons and never lose a match. Known as the Dagenham Invincibles, they will lead the extraordinary movement of female footballers through World War One. As Maya fears she’ll never play again, the Invincibles face their triumph fading into obscurity when the war ends.

The call of the past brings hope for the future and as the eras combine, The Invincibles celebrates the rich history of women in football.
